There are a number of volunteer opportunities even in the dead of winter. If you are interested in volunteering, we probably have some interesting ideas for you.

Thousands of volunteer hours are required each year to:

• Plant and maintain buffers

• Write grants

• Plan and run landowner outreach workshops

• Expand conservation education.

However, there is a wide variety of other volunteer tasks that need willing hands.

Did you know that DTU manages a native tree and shrub nursery? Those native trees and shrubs are used at our project sites. For 6 to 7 weeks each Spring and Fall, volunteers are needed to plant riparian buffers on project sites. Once those project sites are completed, there is maintenance work required to develop healthy buffers and to remove invasive trees, shrubs, and grasses so that native species can thrive.

Pennsylvania’s Trout In the Classroom (TIC) is an interdisciplinary program in which students learn about current and past impacts on the environment and how to mitigate them. In addition, students learn about PA’s coldwater resources, all while raising trout in the classroom. According to records kept by the PA Fish and Boat Commission, currently, there are 33 of these programs in Lancaster County, 24 of which are supported by DTU., DTU is always looking for ways to expand its support for schools and TIC classrooms. Volunteers may be needed to deliver some of this expanded support.

Volunteers are also needed to:

• Write articles for The Mayflyer newsletter

• To insert info into Facebook

• To create or supply educational articles/videos for the website

• Manage public relations projects like Special Olympics, Fishing/Golf Tournaments, or The Fly Fishing Show

• To chair major committees and to serve as public speakers from time to time.
